  • The real life wrecking of the SS Politician off the Hebridean island of Eriskay was the origin of Compton Mackenzie's novel "Whisky Galore".
  • The origin of the name Skye is uncertain but it is thought that it could have a Gaelic origin meaning winged isle referring to the shape of the island.
  • The Isle of Arran is known as "Scotland in Miniature".
  • The Orkney Chair is traditionally made of driftwood with a hand-stitched straw back the Orkney Chair kept its occupant warm through generations. Orkney Chairs are still hand made in Orkney and available to buy.
  • The ornate Italian Chapel on Orkney was crafted by Italian POW's during World War II from a simple Nissen Hut.
