  • The origin of the name Skye is uncertain but it is thought that it could have a Gaelic origin meaning winged isle referring to the shape of the island.
  • Balfour Castle on Shapinsay is the world's most northerly castle hotel.
  • Arran was sacked by the vikings in 797 and did not become part of the Kingdom of Scotland until 1266 at the signing of the Treaty of Perth when all of the Western Isles returned to Scotland.
  • As well as whisky the island of Islay is famous for its birdlife with over 250 species having been spotted.
