You will be travelling on the public train from Mallaig to Fort William (or v.v.), which is operated by our National train operator - ScotRail.
The train follows exactly the same route as the Jacobite Steam Train, which played the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies.
The West Highland Line is considered by many as one of the most scenic rail journeys in the World. On the journey, you will pass Ben Nevis, Britain’s tallest mountain, cross the Caledonian Canal, see picturesque Loch Eilt and admire the silver sands of Morar.
The journey’s highlight is crossing the Glenfinnan Viaduct, just like the Hogwarts Express in the Harry Potter movies.
Please note: ScotRail's service is operated by a diesel train. You will not be travelling on the Jacobite Steam Train.
We allow a stop of approximately 1 hour to visit Eilean Donan Castle.
Please note that this information is for guidance only and the location and duration of any stop may be varied or cancelled for operational reasons.
Yes! Portree is the capital and main town on the Isle of Skye, and therefore is a very popular destination, especially in the summer months. There are many excellent restaurants in Portree, and they tend to get pretty busy, so we strongly recommend making reservations for your evening meal to avoid disappointment.
We advise not making your dinner reservations for any earlier than 7pm to allow plenty of time for the coach to return to Portree, after a full day of exploring the wonders of the Magical Isle.
You can also check out our Portree blog for more tips and information.

Even if you are not from an English speaking country you get all the information from an App too in your preferred language. The landscape is so beautiful and the driver is so careful you never forget this vacation.
A detailed itinerary in advance would have been helpful. Some people had one. Clearer guidance on dinner restaurants in advance, with a few recommendations from previous customers. Advance warning about lunch arrangements and more time in busy towns. The last day for older customers was too long. There was no need to show us the Edinburgh bridges. We found Cara a very good guide and very knowledgable and these comments are no reflection on her at all.
This six day tour of the Highlands and the Outer Hebrides is wonderful. I have never been to Scotland before and I am very happy to have taken this tour which visits many very beautiful, often breathtaking, places. Our outstanding tour guide, Tiegan, shared a lot of the history, culture and stories of her beloved Scotland along the way. Everything on the tour was nicely organized and timed. Accommodations were all fine and the breakfasts substantial, often gourmet. The various hosts and guides we encountered all made us feel welcome and comfortable. I will definitely recommend Scottish Tours to family and friends.
