When is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025?

Every August, Edinburgh comes alive as one of the world’s top spots for arts and culture. The city hosts three famous festivals: the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, the Edinburgh International Festival, and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo. People from all over the world flock here to enjoy amazing shows, lively traditions, and unforgettable experiences in this beautiful and historic city.

The Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025 will run from 1 to 25 August, with some shows offering previews in late July. It’s the biggest open-access arts festival in the world, bringing together three exciting weeks of comedy, theatre, music, dance, cabaret, circus, and all kinds of creative acts.

The Fringe started back in 1947 when a few theatre groups showed up alongside the official Edinburgh International Festival.

Over the years, it’s become a symbol of creative freedom and bold, fresh ideas — a place where new talent and surprising performances are always waiting to be discovered.

What is the Edinburgh Fringe Festival?

Street Performer

It’s a festival where anyone with a show or a story can join in — as long as they find a place to perform! There’s no big committee choosing who gets in, which means you get an amazing mix of acts.

You’ll see everything from up-and-coming comedians and quirky solo shows to famous performers trying out new material and exciting international groups showing off their latest work.

The whole city buzzes with energy. Streets, pubs, churches, parks, and even bus stops turn into stages. As you wander down the famous Royal Mile, you’ll come across fire jugglers, living statues, and comedians inviting you to free shows in tiny rooms — surprises are waiting around every corner!

Edinburgh International Festival

While the Fringe often gets most of the buzz, August in Edinburgh is also home to the famous Edinburgh International Festival.

Unlike the open-to-all Fringe, this festival is carefully planned and brings together some of the best opera, classical music, ballet, and theatre from around the world.

You’ll see top orchestras, dance companies, opera singers, and theatre groups performing shows that aim to challenge, inspire, and make you think.

For 2025, the festival theme is “The Truth We Seek,” offering performances that explore big questions facing today’s world.

Some exciting highlights include an epic eight-hour performance of John Tavener’s The Veil of the Temple at Usher Hall — a beautiful choral piece meant as a spiritual journey — and a daring new ballet about Mary, Queen of Scots, with Scottish Ballet offering a fresh, gender-fluid twist on her story.

The Edinburgh International Festival 2025 dates are 1 August to 24 August 2025

Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo 2025

Another highlight of Edinburgh’s festival season is the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, running from 1 to 23 August 2025.

Set on the stunning esplanade of Edinburgh Castle, this world-famous event is a feast of music, marching pipes and drums, Scottish dance, and impressive military displays.

For 2025, the Tattoo celebrates its 75th anniversary with the theme “The Heroes Who Made Us,” paying tribute to the brave military and civilian figures who helped shape history.

Visitors can look forward to powerful performances by military bands, incredible light shows, and a grand finale with fireworks lighting up the night sky over Edinburgh.

Edinburgh’s other festivals

Alongside the big August events, Edinburgh hosts plenty of other exciting festivals all year round that celebrate the city’s love for arts and culture.

In August, the Edinburgh International Book Festival takes over Charlotte Square Gardens, bringing together authors, poets, journalists, and thinkers from around the world for talks, readings, and lively discussions — it’s the biggest public book festival anywhere!

In June, the Edinburgh International Film Festival showcases bold and creative films, with premieres from both up-and-coming and well-known directors.

Also in August, the Edinburgh Art Festival fills the city’s galleries, museums, and public spaces with special exhibitions and art projects, making it a fantastic time to explore the visual arts scene.

Visiting the Edinburgh Festivals

Frinnge Street Performer

If you’re planning to visit the Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2025, it’s a good idea to plan ahead so you can enjoy everything August in Edinburgh has to offer.

Tickets for the most popular Fringe shows, International Festival performances, and the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo can sell out weeks or even months in advance — especially for weekends or special nights.

Booking your accommodation early is also smart, as hotels, B&Bs, and hostels fill up fast during festival season. Many visitors like to stay in the city centre, near the Old Town and New Town, so they can walk to most venues. But don’t worry — Edinburgh’s good public transport means you can also stay a bit further out and still get around easily.
