Our day starts with a panoramic tour of Glasgow. First, we see the University Quarter and impressive Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum. Head into the city centre to view the grand blond and red sandstone buildings of the Victorian era including the ornate City Chambers (town hall), in statue-lined George Square. Our tour ends at 12th Century Cathedral where we'll hear the story of St Mungo, the city's patron saint.
The Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park is famed for its natural beauty. Enjoy a panorama of rolling hills, sparkling lochs and quaint villages as we drive to Aberfoyle, in the heart of Rob Roy MacGregor country. You can discover more about this folk-hero during our time in this delightful little town.
Stirling Castle has a commanding cliff-top position overlooking the city and was a favoured residence of the Scottish Kings and Queens. During our visit see the opulent Royal Palace and Great Hall. Later this afternoon we will arrive in Edinburgh. Tonight why not step out to attend a Scottish evening complete with dancing, bagpipes and the famous Haggis ceremony.
Overnight: Kings Manor Hotel, Edinburgh (or similar) (2 nights)
Day 3 - Discover Edinburgh
A local expert joins us this morning to guide our city tour. First, we will see the neo-classical buildings of the Georgian New Town. These elegant squares and terraces were home to some of Scotland's greatest scientists and inventors. Later visit magnificent Edinburgh Castle to see the Scottish Crown Jewels, then drive along the famous Royal Mile to see the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the official Scottish residence of HM The Queen.
This afternoon is at leisure so you can enjoy Edinburgh on your own. If you'd like to discover more about Royal Edinburgh, why not join the optional excursion to visit the Royal Yacht Britannia. Step aboard to learn what life was like for the Royal Family and crew during the 40 years this majestic ship sailed the oceans of the World. End this excursion with dinner, before returning to our hotel. If your tour departure coincides with the Edinburgh Festival season, tickets are included to a performance of the Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo.
Day 4 - Edinburgh - St Andrews - Strathpeffer
We have lots to look forward to today. First, enjoy panoramic views of the Forth Estuary as we cross the Forth Bridge to reach the ancient Kingdom of Fife. Look out for the mighty rail bridge, built-in 1889, it has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
The seaside town of St Andrews is known for its religious history as well as being the home of Scotland's oldest university. More famously, this attractive town is known as the home of Golf. Look out for the legendary Old Course and the R&A, who set the rules of the game for much of the World.
Later we tour through Highland Perthshire and make a stop in the attractive resort of Pitlochry. Our journey continues into the Cairngorms National Park, famed for its natural beauty and mountain panoramas.
Our last visit is to Culloden Moor, the site of the last battle fought on British Soil. The Jacobite army of Bonnie Prince Charlie met the Government forces here in 1746. The Jacobites were routed, as we shall hear, changing life in the Highlands forever.
Overnight: Ben Wyvis Hotel, Strathpeffer (or similar)(2 nights)
Day 5 - Highland Excursion
Spectacular scenery awaits us as we leave Strathpeffer behind and make our way along the banks of the Dornoch Firth to reach the thundering Falls of Shin. This remote spot is one of the best places to view wild salmon as they strive to swim upstream to spawn. The viewing platform gives us the perfect spot to watch all the action.
Our drive continues through the Kyle of Sutherland then into the wilderness and ancient geology of the Knochan Crag National Nature Reserve. These dramatic landscapes date back over 500 million years and are awash with history.
The destination of our excursion is the picturesque fishing port of Ullapool which sits on Loch Broom. There is free time to relax in this bustling port before we return to Strathpeffer along the banks of Loch Glascarnoch.
This afternoon you can relax in the Victorian Spa town of Strathpeffer or join the optional excursion to Loch Ness which includes a monster-spotting cruise.
