How to Get to the Isle of Skye

The fun starts before you even arrive in Skye. The island’s remote location is all part of its charm — it feels like you’re journeying towards a completely new planet.

Skye is just a twenty-minute ferry ride from the beautiful town of Mallaig on the west coast of Scotland.

The best way to get to Skye is to take a leisurely three day tour from Edinburgh or Glasgow. You’ll drive along the banks of Loch Ness, before spending two nights on the Isle of Skye in Kyleakin/Broadford.

Or, add a touch of magic to your Skye adventure with a side-trip on the Jacobite Steam Train and whistle through the Scottish Highlands along the iconic Harry Potter route. Making your journey to the Isle of Skye truly unforgettable.

What to Pack for a Winter in the Isle of Skye

With Scotland being Scotland, it might be wise to pack an umbrella for your visit.

Weather on the Isle of Skye varies from season to season. In the Summer months, you can expect highs of over 20°C and the beaches are some of the best in Europe.

However, in the winter, we recommend wrapping up warm and bringing a flask for the icy temperatures.

Skye is stunning in winter. Your breath cuts through the crisp fresh air, and the sound of your hiking boots crunching through the snow is magical. Make sure you bring plenty of layers and come prepared with plenty of spare clothes in case you get caught in the rain.
