From Inverness we make the short journey to fairytale Cawdor Castle*, a family home for over 600 years. Cawdor was made famous by William Shakespeare in his "Scottish PlayĒ (Macbeth). This romantic castle dates from the 14th Century and boasts a varied collection of paintings, furniture and tapestries. Not to be missed are the extensive gardens and nature trails.

We join the famous Malt Whisky Trail and no visit to this part of Scotland would be complete without a visit to a whisky distillery. After hearing how "the water of lifeĒ is produced and a guided tour of the whisky stills we can sample a "wee dramĒ in the tasting room. For whisky connoisseurs a visit to the distillery shop is a must!

Prince Albert bought the Balmoral Estate in 1852 and ever since this part of Scotland has been known as Royal Deeside. Weíll visit the pleasant little town of Ballater, once famous for its health-giving waters and now bristling with "By Royal AppointmentĒ crests above the shops that overlook the town square.

As we drive along the Royal Deeside route you might be lucky to catch a glimpse of Balmoral Castle through the trees before we stop at little Crathie Kirk, where the Royal Family worship when staying at their nearby estate.

As we leave Royal Deeside behind look out for white-washed Corgarff Castle. This isolated Castle was used to protect the military road over the Grampian Mountains which was built in 1745 during Bonnie Prince Charlieís Jacobite rebellion. This spectacular route has remained largely unchanged to this day and rises to some 600 metres. Youíll discover that The Lecht, as this road is known, offers a thrilling journey!

Our last stop is in Tomintoul, an attractive 18th century planned village with a central square and many Georgian and Victorian buildings. After time to chill itís time to board our minicoach for the last part of our journey through picturesque Speyside and back to Inverness.
