Full Tour Itinerary
Departing Edinburgh we make the short drive to the delightful town of South Queensferry to enjoy the panoramic views over the Forth Estuary. See the iconic Forth Bridges: the Forth Rail Bridge built in 1890 and now a UNESCO heritage site; the classic Forth Road Bridge and the new Queensferry Crossing. Together they make an impressive sight. Shortly we will cross the River Forth to reach our first stop at historical Dunfermline Abbey and Palace. The Abbey was the burial place of many Scottish Kings and Queens including Robert the Bruce. During our visit here will be the opportunity to photograph his elaborate golden tomb. Later there will be the chance to wander around the Abbey and its grounds to see the results of the “reformation”, a time when many churches were destroyed and desecrated.
In the centre of Dunfermline we will pass Carnegie Hall (Andrew Carnegie, the world famous steel magnet and philanthropist was born in the town. He emigrated to the USA in 1848, but never forgot his Scottish roots). We make our way along the Fife coast to discover the delightful little fishing villages of the “East Neuk”. We will make a stop in Anstruther, an old Herring fishing port, where we can experience freshly cooked Fish and Chips at an award-winning restaurant or enjoy a snack at the Fisheries Museum.
Later we make our way to St. Andrews, home of golf, religion and, of course, St. Andrews University. We’ll have an extended stop here so you can have a relaxed visit to this historic town.
If the weather is kind why not take a stroll along the beach that featured in the popular film “Chariots of Fire”. Also on your “must see” list should be St Andrews Castle, the residence of Scotland’s most powerful churchmen and St Andrews Cathedral, where the climb to the top of St Rule’s Tower will award you with glorious views over the town. Golf fans might want to seek out the grave of Young Tom Morris or visit the popular Golf Museum. No visit to St Andrews would be complete without a walk along Grannie Clark’s Wynd, a public right-of-way, over the 1st and the 18th fairways of the old course.
After our visit to St Andrews we will return directly to Edinburgh where our tour ends at a central location.
