Full Tour Itinerary
Leaving Glasgow behind our first visit of the day is toDoune Castle*, known as Outlander's home of the MacKenzie Clan (Castle Leoch). We stop here to visit this magnificent 14th Century courtyard castle which has also had a starring role in Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Game of Thrones. Look out for the 100 foot high gatehouse and magnificent great hall, one of the best preserved in Scotland.
It’s a short drive to Deanston Distillery for refreshments then onwards to Stirling, where we’ll make a photo-stop to capture the view of the Wallace Monument, built to commemorate the famous Scottish freedom fighter (the real Braveheart!). During our stop you’ll also see Stirling Castle, standing proudly guarding the surrounding countryside.
Next we make our way to the quaint little town of Culrosswhich is the location of Cranesmuir. On our visit it doesn’t take much imagination to relive 16th and 17th Century life as we walk amid the old buildings and cobbled streets of this Royal burgh on the banks of the River Forth.
Through wars, rebellions and the industrial revolution, Callendar House has played host to many great historical figures over the centuries, including Mary, Queen of Scots, Cromwell and Bonnie Prince Charlie. This impressive building dates from the 14th century and its grounds contains a section of the Antonine Wall World Heritage Site. Be sure to visit the famous kitchen which was the setting for the Duke of Sandringham’s home.
Linlithgow Palace* is the location of Wentworth Prison, where Jamie was imprisoned. In real life it was once a Royal residence and was the birthplace of Mary Queen of Scots. We’ll make an extended stop here so you can explore this historic town and enjoy time for lunch.
Blackness Castle stands overlooking the Firth of Forth. This 15th Century castle was the home of the Crichton Family. As its impressive walls resemble a ship it was often known as "the ship that never sailed”. Fans will find it familiar as the setting for the Fort William headquarters of Black Jack Randall. We’ll make a stop here for photographs before joining the motorway and the journey back to Glasgow.
