Dunrobin Castle & The Falls of Shin
from Inverness
INCLUDES: Transportation by superior air-conditioned mini-coach; services of a tour host; service charges and taxes.
This fascinating and relaxing tour will introduce you to stately Dunrobin Castle, the picturesque scenery of Easter Ross and even let you visit the most northerly branch of Harrods. A splendid day out with a difference!
We leave Inverness behind and head across the Black Isle to the Cromarty Firth. In Golspie, high above the town, is an astonishing statue, 27m (90') high. This is of the First Duke of Sutherland, whose agents were involved in the most notorious of the Clearances in the Highlands during the 19th Century. We’ll hear more about this sad episode in the history of Scotland and contrast the story with the opulence of magnificent Dunrobin Castle, the ancestral home of the Duke of Sutherland. Our optional visit to Dunrobin will give you time to explore the castle and it’s extensive gardens. A real highlight is the falconry display that takes place in the grounds!
After leaving the castle we take the short journey along the coast to Carn Liath, an impressive iron age broch. Excavated by the Duke of Sutherland this was originally assumed to be a burial site, but on excavation was found to be a defensive structure dating back over 2000 years.
We then head to the picturesque town of Dornoch for some lunch and make a visit to the 13th century cathedral.
The dramatic Falls of Shin are our next treat. Probably the best place in Scotland to see majestic Atlantic salmon in their natural habitat. Watch salmon battle their way up the waterfall from the viewing gallery. Another feature of our stop here is the impressive visitor centre, which is known as the Harrods of the North. Here you can purchase authentic Harrods merchandise thanks to the Laird of this estate who also owns that well-known emporium in London!
